Lithuania — A man captured a strange phenomenon on video while walking his dog around a frozen pond in Lithuania.
The YouTube user behind the amazing footage, BruchoMetal4Ever, says he found the spot by accident and that he is not sure as to what it really is.
“Usually people drills waterholes in their ponds where fish lives, at winter time, so fish can breathe. I thought i will see some fishes and stuff… But as soon as i came closer, i noticed that it was evaporating,” he explained.
He further describes the event as if the pond “was melted with fire.” The video, taken in January, is two minutes long and features some foul language.
Even though the photographer doubts the incident has anything to do with oil or volcanic activity, it has now been documented that certain forms of life can thrive in inhospitable places such as volcanos of the deep sea.
“The phenomenon could also be a hot-cold current effect creating an illusion to deceive the human eye,” says Stephen Mildrew, professor at a Spanish university. “It is as simple as that, we look at it and it could just be a bit of mud mixed with the ice coming up and down, being pushed by hot water currents when they come in contact with the cold ones,” Mildrew said.
Whether the incident is part of a natural phenomenon or a shy creature hiding from the curious human remains unknown.

Some ponds grow a skin of algae like stuff on the bottom, which can vary in color. It appears this is a spring area in the pond where a piece of this algae, in sheet form, has broken from the bottom and is being pushed up to the top of the pond / ice by the spring.
The frog that appears briefly in the video would confirm this is a spring area of the pond, as the frog would be there for the slightly warmer water and to feed on other critters coming to the area for the same reason.
