Nature of the Goblin: Sightings, Videos and Retrospective

Those who enjoy diving deep into the mysteries of cryptozoology know that every now and then, someone reports a sighting of such bizarre nature that even the most open minded researchers promptly dismiss as fantasy.

And although sometimes, indeed, the report ends up laying on that pile of fictional debris, it is usually the opposite that takes place; film makers and book authors rush to verified stories of the strange in order to create their own worlds for people’s entertainment.

The goblin falls into this category. Countless legends in ancient books detail the goblin’s human-like appearance. Now, hundreds of researchers and people who claim to have seen the cryptid, keep flooding the internet with videos and theories in an effort to explain what these creatures really are. From extraterrestrial explanations -like the Kelly-Hopkinsville encounter-, to bloodline associations of the creature with the shy gnome or the mischievous leprechaun.

In 2012, a man captured a mysterious image he believes could contain a “being walking through the woods with a lantern”.

The video, taken by a trail camera in an undisclosed location of North America and shared on YouTube by user 123superbox, shows a pair of deer grazing at night, suddenly startled by an unknown source of light and what looks like a “being” coming out of the grass. The light and the strange shape then vanish, reappearing seconds later on a different location on the screen.

“I went out one day and checked my trail camera a few days after i set it up, and this is what i found,” the man said.

“If you look closely, it looks like a creepy being holding some sort of lantern,” he continued.

The figure, he explained, can’t be a human because “a normal whitetail deer would run off at the sight and sound of a human, and the deer keep looking at the being and go right back to eating”.

Unidentified sources of light show up a few times during the video,  but it is only the first 10 seconds that seemingly conceal the strange shape.

It is the goblin’s human-like appearance that seems to fascinate the human mind. How, one wonders, could it be that there are such creatures out there -so similar to us- and yet no-one has been able to prove their existence after so many generations of documented encounters?

In 1873, Norwegian Dr. Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen discovered a germ that had been tormenting the human kind for thousands of years. It was finally determined that leprosy wasn’t hereditary or a curse. While Hansen’s discovery of Mycobacterium leprae triggered some scientific progress, society mostly remained the same for the victims of the disease; lepers were still being forced to abide by certain rules and to wear mandatory clothing that would undoubtedly be considered unethical ,with some exceptions, in most world cultures today.

With a black wardrobe and a warning bell -maybe an additional oil lamp at night-, deformed lepers could have been subject to goblin misidentification in the eyes of fearful citizens, prompting the creation of new legends. Granted, this theory wouldn’t make much sense in today’s society, where leprosy has been -for the most part- eradicated. However, a small percentage of the current sightings could be partially explained by a similar premise: the social stigma that current economic factors have inked on half a million homeless people in the United States alone. Take the case of New Jersey, for instance, where dozens of homeless are now living in forest camps.

Certainly, not all these humanoid sightings are merely a case of human misidentification. Even though it is important to err on the side of caution and keep an skeptical mind, there are still plenty of encounters reported by credible witnesses who occasionally provide videographic evidence that should not be so rapidly dismissed. Sometimes, somethings hide more than the human eye can perceive.

While the anomaly in the video could be the headlights of a car driving on a nearby road, there is still a clear, unidentified shape revealed by an intermittent light. It looks as though there was a creature covered with a blanket, with two bright eyes, floating from right to left.

It is possible that we are just looking at an optical illusion similar to the Marfa lights, or most likely the gestalt laws of grouping playing with the background vegetation to generate a trick on the human eye.

The rest of the videos uploaded by the user are not paranormal related, showing 123superbox’s lack of interest in the subject, which supports the legitimacy of the video

A clearer example is the daylight footage that a fisherman captured in 2009, showing a “goblin-like” humanoid behind the bushes in a wooded area next to the town of Cimarron, Oklahoma.
